Most people actually don't like seeing the fucked up side of society because it threatens their investment in it and triggers a feeling of need for change (change is difficult). People only want to see fake shounen play villains and then feel good about them getting beaten up.
Seeing characters be both good and bad causes conflicting feelings, because there's no perfect object to love or perfect enemy to hate. Seeing characters act like links in a chain based on how they were fucked up by the previous generation makes them very uncomfortable because it threatens the illusion of free will.
