>reptiles are so stupid
I have some pet geckos. Their behavior is almost insect simple at times. If their hunting technique is subtle, it's because the entire species instinctively hunts that way and has for however many millions of years. No reptile is improvising anything ever. Most of them are ambush predators. If prey insects happen to be in unexpected places it's like they can't even see them despite the bugs being close enough to casually gobble without effort. I have seen my leopard gecko sit absolutely still in hunting mode watching a cricket across the tank meanwhile there is another cricket walking directly over his front feet.
