>Gatekeeping doesn't exist.
It does.
>You can't even gatekeep /a/, nevermind anime itself.
We can and we have. Perhaps you have a misunderstanding of what gatekeeping truly is. Why don't more neurotypical people come to 4chan or /a/ for their anime needs? Because theres a heavy chance they'll see a racial slur or a loli. Thats a person gatekept from the community.
Why doesn't someone /a/ or 4chan visit a shitshow like twitter, reddit forums or some other regular center for weeb shit. Because their behaviors gatekeep us from wanting to be anywhere near them. That's what it means to gatekeep. You hold your medium/community to a standard, and don't change it for the sake of newcomers.
Anime becoming more popular is gradually changing its standards for western audiences. Here at /a/, we loved anime. We know it is our not our place to change anything of it, and we have always just accepted their bullshit good and all. We fit in and accept anime culture.
The new western fanbase isn't like that, they mald about strange things like skintones, lolis and fan service, actually demanding for the japanese to appease them.
Me ignoring shows doesn't fix the problem ofc, its just a preference. It is ultimately up to the japanese and their authors to naturally 'gatekeep' anime, just as /a/ naturally gatekeeps /a/
Anyways, my point is gatekeeping certainly does exist. It is just a natural part of any community to defend its state of being and not change it for outsiders. That is gatekeeping at its core.
