This makes me think of Mettaton's tendency to make himself incredibly important to someone (Cousins, Alphys, Fans) then immediately drop them when something better shows up.
Of course it is mostly a selfish behavior, but I wonder if it isn't an attempt to not have to ever feel rejection, by rejecting someone first. Maybe not a deliberate power play but an unconcious one.
