A long time ago something happened called Cold War. On one side you had maids who wanted to operate bigger numbers faster. On the other side, you had maids who wanted to build cybernetics. The Soviet Union failed to listen to their own maids, or give them access to the best computers. America threw a powerful computer at any maid who expressed an interest in using it for advanced Mathematics and Computer Science research and built a communications network for them. This caused an insurmountable Big Number Gap between the USA and USSR. All the Russian maids were effectively forced to be Numberlets because some old guy in the Kremlin didn't understand why the best Computer Scientists in the country needed access to the best computers, or why giving them to the military instead of maids was extremely short-sighted and wasteful of a limited resource and retarded progress in numerous fields. All the American maids were inventing things like Dynamic Programming and advanced compression to be able to use their computers more efficiently to operate bigger numbers faster.
We're having this conversation in English because someone wearing a maid outfit in America was better supported than someone wearing a maid outfit in Russia, 40-60 years ago. The lesson for all world governments should have been that if someone wearing a maid outfit politely asks you for a computer, you should give it to her.
