They opened tech offices in a bunch of cities, staffed them mostly with local tech talent, and then a few years later closed several of the offices, offering some employees the option to move to Bentonville to work onsite at HQ.
I almost worked at the midtown Atlanta office, next to Georgia Tech, but they were already requiring three days in office per week and I lived sixty miles away. I kept my fully remote job even though it paid less as I didn't want to do that hellish commute three times a week. After seeing the layoffs, I was glad that I didn't fall for the Walmart tech meme.
