Not really. The PAVN crushed the Khmer Rouge in pitched battle, but then found themselves in a nightmare of their own making fighting what was left of the Khmer Rouge and various other insurgent groups in the jungles along the Thai border. After a decade, they finally gave up and withdrew and Cambodia’s old king, whom the Vietnamese had been instrumental in overthrowing, was back on his throne within three years (hmmmmm… where have we heard this before?).

I always like to say that the Khmer Rouge was one of the most frightening moments of the 20th Century, arguably in recorded history.
