I want to go to Ukraine and enlist with a unit that will take me, but is it too late? Are people going to wonder why I didn't come sooner and why come now of all times?

It's nothing to do with any recent peace talks. I don't think there's going to be peace anytime soon. Russia is finally turning the tide of their war toward their favour and they're not going to want to play their whole hand so soon.

Train body and linguistics first. Reach out to contractors in the US and ask them if they have a venue for this sort of thing.

Unless you have a lot of prior experience as infantry, can drive heavy vehicles, or have electronics/mechanic/engineering skills, you won't get much of a reception. Raw manpower isn't an issue, but specialisation is. If you can design/build drones, train troops, drive trucks or have specialist training in recon, artillery, MLRS etc. they'll very quickly find a place for you without once asking why you waited until now.

Azov, international legion, 47th mechanized brigade, 27th airborne are just a few I can name off the top of my head that will take people with no prior experience or any ability to speak Ukrainian. Theres various levels of acceptance regarding your fitness level , some will take you even if your a massive lardass. Wouldn't advise being that guy, you will die exhausted and in an embarrassing way. They need guys bad. It's fucking desperate over there. But fucking prepare before you go, get the fuck in shape, no matter what role you are giving over there (99% chance it will be infantry) you will get stories if you survive. What KIND of stories those will be and how the guys in your unit will remember you is entirely up to you.

Russia throw around the term 'mercenary' a lot because particularly over there it has a strong cultural stigma. Think the politics of when someone's a terrorist or insurgent versus when they're a rebel or freedom fighter.
