People complain about rolling and parrying and whatnot, but I think the thing that truly makes Souls-like cancerous is the focus on heals.

It's the excuse of having 5-10 sippies on hand at all times that allowed devs to turn Souls-like bosses into multi-phase, non-interactive monstrosities of today. It's the healing systems that fundamentally drive a wedge between them and classic hack & slashes because they're a mechanic that was conceived for exploration-focused gameplay were you would be slowly losing resources to a variety of enemies and trap, rather than fast, on-the-moment combat testing your reactions and proficiency.

As hardcore as Souls-like players will pretend to be they're still playing games that give you a bunch of extra chances any time you fuck up. That's why the game design in Souls games feels so unsatisfying, as it's evolved in order to punish thoughtless rolling or healing... things the devs could've just removed from the game if they didn't want you to do them.
