Same dynamic was true in Vietnam. Why do you think Nixon/Kissinger made a deal with China? It was the only way we could leave Vietnam(see Opening of China/Sino-Soviet split). It's basically the same strategy we're trying to do right now with Russia/China except in reverse(split Russia from China).
