The problem was that staying in Afghanistan came at a massive geopolitical and monetary cost. So we left. It wasn't because the Taliban defeated us militarily. They just bogged us down. Same dynamic was true in Vietnam. Why do you think Nixon/Kissinger made a deal with China? It was the only way we could leave Vietnam(see Opening of China/Sino-Soviet split). It's basically the same strategy we're trying to do right now with Russia/China except in reverse(split Russia from China).
