Have recently started playing it for the Halloween weekend, only six hours in. Love it, yet can't say that it's "objectively" such a good game. Enemies, spooks, puzzles, mechanics, weapons are all just solid at best.
Yeah, the art style, music, sound design carry it hard. But it's also very straightforward and easy to get into. Would say, that's part of the appeal and success. You don't need to be a survival horror fan to enjoy this game. And I don't mean this as a negative.

SIGNALIS rides the coat tails of other survival horrors and its inspirations to a detriment. This is mainly with the "rule of six" inventory, where half the playtime is simply spent backtracking for key items or ammo because of the limited inventory despite them being robots.
I liked the story and music, as well as the character designs and their small backstories, but the yuri plot that only gets introduced in NG+ was really annoying and it was a slog to play through.

What other major horror works use the "This page left intentionally blank" thing? The visual design is derivative of SH and Evangelion but is done in a tasteful way. And nearly the entire game (aside from a few parts) is narrated through a screen (hence the visual glitches, the game over being "Fatal error") which lends credibility to some of the symbolism. In fact, almost the entire game has the screen permeated by a giant red eye that "watches" you constantly, and you only see it if you raise your brightness.

Honestly I think the influence from SH is mostly fine except for two core problems, one that it mixes the mechanics with RE and it causes a grinding of gears since SH's puzzles and combat aren't based around inventory management and the level design reflects that accordingly. The second issue is that there's parts where it stops being influenced and just copies shamelessly, there's a room in the Mines section which is copied 1-to-1 from a room in the prison section of SH2 and it's so overt that it kills the atmosphere and immersion completely.

It has a fantastic and diverse OST that helps sell its high impact scenes, a striking and consistent aesthetic immediately distinguishable from any other game on the market, interesting puzzles that tie into the larger narrative, and by your own admission an interesting story. And by god, the one thing these horror games always get wrong, the combat is fine!
