The reason the Soviets lost the Cold War isn't because they took catastrophic losses in Afghanistan. It was that their incursion into Afghanistan was turning most of their allies against them. The Soviets "lost" China in the Sino-Soviet split. Their Afghan War was losing them the entire Middle-East. By the 1980's, they were basically completely encircled by three hostile blocs.

Which is why the "New Russia" that came after the collapse of the Soviet Union is an intentionally anti-ideological state.
