The game has lost everyone other than competitive players, but those kinds of people don't buy product because they know that buying singles is always the most efficient way to build the best decks in a tcg. Another side effect of this is that everything that isn't used in a top tier deck is completely worthless, because who the fuck is gonna buy stuff that can't top a ycs? The game is completely fucked and I wouldn't be surprised if one piece takes it over in sales and it stops being considered one of the big three.

XYZ being generic enough to be made with literally any 2 monsters that have the same level was the beginning of the end. The game was still good, but it was a slow descent into hell after that. By the time spyral format happened powercreep had gotten so out of hand that the game wasn't fun anymore. It's just inevitable when you refuse to have a rotating format, but even mtg powercreep is insane nowadays so maybe even that wouldn't have worked.
