Cristoforo power works like this:
He needs an existing story A (mya 20 years before), and a very similar story B currently happening in loop (lupa story currently). At each iteration he can make small alterations swapping elements of story A and B in order to create a unique outcome. Before carthetyia arrives lupa was dieing in a loop being replaced by mya (leviathan) making so the story was nearly replaced already, but carthetyia just nuke the story and held cristoforo back so they can't use the current iteration to the next anymore (diverged too much) and set things so rover would team up with lupa (leaving her frequency and telling lupa about rover). Next iteration had to start from story B again, but now rover is in it and figures everything out, and uses imperator authority (the ability to split) in order to separate the roles of mya and lupa, finally giving lupa the freedom to act outside of the script, and holding down the empowered threnodian from the loops. Then finally lupa using the information she got from carthetyia locates lupa, and sets up to recreate the original ending from A (mya stabbed in the heart) but in a way that respected her (dying in combat, the greatest honor for a septimontian).
