but "caching" in this context means your os puts shit in your hard drive which then means you get it back at the speed of said hard drive

the whole computation thing works by taking data physically from a point a to a point b which is the gpu or the cpu
the data physically is moved from place to place and thats why its important to consider where the data resides.
it takes longer to fetch data from a hard drive than from ram. and the difference is big

you need big ram
its essential because thats where all the other components of your computer get their data from
if they need to get their data from a hard drive instead everything becomes slow
ram is really a convenience measure
