I'd like to think that the next Star Fox game will be handed off to some new team / studio who has lots of big ideas that don't involve gimmicks. Star Fox Assault was a great direction for the franchise to move in but instead of letting it continue to grow and get more refined, Nintendo abandoned that direction entirely and made a bizarre 80s computer war game for the DS.
People are also tired of Andross. Star Fox is not Mario, you can't have the same villain conflict in every game. That would be like if every Star Trek movie had Kahn as the villain.
