This. NHK's target demographic is niche, although maybe you could extend it to all depressed people even if they aren't neets/hikkis. The average normalfag can't easily self-insert and it's too real for the average neet. Almost every second of the anime reminds you of the fact that you're digging yourself into a hole. It's one of the least escapist media out there, in part because it never allows itself to fully indulge in misery porn. The ending is bleak and uncertain but still allows for the possibility of Satou's life improving in the future, which ironically makes it harder to accept than something that's just complete despair. I'd go as far as saying that the difference between the average isekai and something like oyasumi punpun isn't actually that big, as both ultimately escapist.
