It was way more popular back in the day. It’s just 20 years old and doesn’t have as much of an impact. Plus in this day of flashy colors and crunching the fuck out of animators to make their cartoons more smooth, the animation here is pretty lacking.
It’s still one of my favorite anime (although it hasnt aged as well as I thought it would as Ive grown older). Alongside Lucky Star, it’s a wonderful time capsule into mid 2000s-early 2010s Anime culture. It’s an era that doesn’t really exist anymore. I think the difference between whenever or not a weeb knows about it or not is through what method and when they got into anime.
If someone got through anime via TikTok or Instagram in the late 2010s/early 2020s, I highly doubt they’d watch this.

Also, ironically, Sato seems to have way more friends and outgoing in comparison to a lot of shut-in nowadays. A NEET nowadays would probably have to live with their parents cause and just door dash his groceries. Being a NEET back in 2006 still required you to actually leave your bedroom and the CoL was fair cheaper
