Is it controversial to say that the light novel is the better of the adaptations?
I won't lie, I'm still working my way through the manga roughly around the end of volume 2 so it probably takes just as drastic as a turn later on since the anime ended first, but it's fascinating to see how much was added and changed from the original story. I just did a rewatch and even though I still enjoyed it, I can't say it hit the same as when I first watched it.

Just recently did a rewatch of this show and while aspects of it I find interesting, I feel it doesn't hit as hard as it should, for all the lows the show reaches it tends to pull its punches for all the side characters except for Satou and even then the anime leads him to eventually get a job after nearly starving to death and inevitably reaches some form of a "romantic" relationship with Misaki, even if he never got to fulfill his fantasies of being with his Senpai.
I'm making my way thru the manga and light novel currently and I'm surprised they didn't focus on Satou's drug use more in the anime, it's never acknowledged once, but I assume that's probably censorship? Same with Yamazaki being a more hardcore lolicon, but the anime alludes to this with a brief comment by one of his classmates that Satou overhears. I hear Misaki is more of a bitch in the manga, and while I find her to be manipulative and weird, I can sorta understand her mentality, in a way her and Satou are kinda meant for each other but idk if broken people should be left to fix each other up even if the ending to the anime implies a relatively more hopeful end for the two, although I don't think the equivalent of a "cold war" suicide pact is particularly hopeful. In any case, Misaki is cute so I'll give her a pass and Puzzle is one of my favorite anime OPs of all time, although the remix in the second half can go to hell for removing the trumpet.

Is it a conspiracy?

Abe's style and NHK as a story are inherently incompatible and you're too blinded by your bias/liking of Abe and NHK both to see that their unity isn't feasible. Especially in an anime. Tatsuhiko liked Abe so he had him do some covers and drawings. Does that necessarily need to translate to a full blown anime in that style? The bright-color high of the initial phase of the story leading the way for the darker edge that comes into play later is a much better take than it being that way from the jump. The anime is perfect as it is and a great adaptation. It looks good, for sure. But what would Abe's style add to NHK beyond just a coat of paint?
