I reread the journals and I'm not sure he was being tortured, but I suppose interrogated can reasonably be interpreted that way. Regardless, if he could kill her, he probably could've also just escaped. I don't think it was some horrific act, it was obviously a very dire and emotional situation, but I do feel it was brushed off a bit.
