The fucked up thing about Mario is the single best written game BY FAR has no credited writer.
We can try to go back to the previous game that had very similar writing, TTYD, and there we find Hironobu Suzuki as script supervisor, who is just credited as a manager on SPM, and Misao Fukuda as script writer, who is a complete mystery? They're not credited on any other games except, somehow, Clock Tower 3? Maybe they got married and changed their name or left the industry outright?
Strange fates for people who some might call Mario's answer to Maekawa.
