The hands-off nature Spielberg took with the show actually gave the show a really interesting vibe when it came to the characters' meta awareness of their universe.
Imagine waking up sharing a body with a mad god that can bend reality at will, but at the same time you're cursed with the knowledge that the creator of your universe brought it into existence so it could be a TV show, but it's his third time doing this and he's kinda over the whole thing and the writers have been given very little direction.
Imagine being an ordinary nerd one day and then suddenly being given the reigns to your reality by it's inattentive god and knowing that it's continued existence is now dependent on the approval ratings of whatever you can come up with on the spot.

He's more like Ermac from Mortal combat. Dexter's voice is in there, but it's drowned out in the sea of other voices of every other internet user.
That said, unlike Hulk or the Mask, Freakazoid considered him and Dexter two sides of the same person, and will actively avoid ruining Dexter's life, for the most part.
