I think it was for the best, honestly. Though a more serious but otherwise similar show could work well. I always enjoyed the more serious parts in Freakazoid (as serious as the show gets), like in The Chip. Gutierrez was a great villain as a more serious threat than most of the others.

Pinky and the Brain also turns 30, but nobody gave a shit even though its objecticely the best Spielberg cartoon.

especially since it was always meant to be a comedy.. it was just gonna be funny things happening in a serious setting. Which... like, basically they wanted to do Deadpool. and I seriously doubt they were going to pull that off. Better to go full silly, and meta shit was still really fresh back then. They had the same spirit that had Monty Python having a sketch where they run outside, and "good lord fellas, we're on FILM!" because that's how 70s tv worked..

The hands-off nature Spielberg took with the show actually gave the show a really interesting vibe when it came to the characters' meta awareness of their universe.
Imagine waking up sharing a body with a mad god that can bend reality at will, but at the same time you're cursed with the knowledge that the creator of your universe brought it into existence so it could be a TV show, but it's his third time doing this and he's kinda over the whole thing and the writers have been given very little direction.
Imagine being an ordinary nerd one day and then suddenly being given the reigns to your reality by it's inattentive god and knowing that it's continued existence is now dependent on the approval ratings of whatever you can come up with on the spot.
