>What was being a furfag like at the time? What was the fandom like?
NTA, but it was better than late 90s, early 2000s when you were effectively defined by the MTV episode about furries and culturally normies were more willing to shame and humiliate you for it. The crazy Con stories were definitely later on but by then you were tempered by the open animosity of non-furries and really the community itself was pretty pissed about the retards that did that shit. The fandom itself had its own divisions and issues. There was a strong anti-NSFW movement for a while known as the "burnt furs" that tried to get NSFW artists banned from cons and art sites. Otherkin, Baby Furs, and zoos were fringe and marginally tolerated if only because there was nothing you could really do but isolate them socially. Sparkledogs oversaturated the art community with all the colors of the neon rainbow in their designs. Beyond that, I mostly fell out of being active in the community once social media really took over. It was too exhausting.

Furry art wasn't really any harder to come by than any other art type. You just had to know what sites to go to pre-social media.
