Let's not underestimate the value of a car. You can jerk off about the convenience of trains to any nook and cranny of the city, but driving along the mountainside or oceanside is peak Japanese for me. I love emerging out of a tunnel into one of those hamlets tucked away in valleys. It helps that where I grew up the highest point was a meter-tall hill.
