There was some video recently where asian guys living around these places were talking about how the original people/monks were long since dead and LARPers took over the temples and over time people wanted them to be the real deal so they just gradually became that after LARPing so long and developed their own traditions so basically this isnt what the "real" monks would have been doing its all been reinvented. Tho I myself dont know where the truth is, it sounds plausible to me it would play out like this
