Why did metahumans have to exist for 300 years? Why that year specifically?

Most people who I see praise this movie seem to not be interested in comic books. They take it for what it is and as someone who actually likes Superman the whole thing felt more like a parody of everything I like about him. I was sat in the theatre and felt like I was being mocked.
