The games have been objectively shit from a quality point of view since gen 6.
It was the first major drop in quality the series saw, especially in terms of support when Pokebank had all that down time with 0 official updates. It was also blatantly unfinished before the leaks came out and we know just how much was scrapped.

I don't know how you people hold onto cope that after several mainline games and spinoffs that GameFreak are somehow going to want to invest more into a series that generates ungodly profits on low budgets. They have literally no reason to.

Mario 64 and OoT/MM were good at taking concepts children were familiar with, and twisting them enough to trigger the fear response in the brain. They blended the familiar with the unfamiliar. Also the sound cues that played made the imagery more terrifying.
