I remember this exact image from the prerelease Melee days. Oldfagging at the speed of a snail.
My childhood fear is lightning. We were on a road trip and our vehicle got struck by lightning. Everything seemed fine but ten minutes later, one of our tires exploded while we were speeding on the interstate and we spun out into a median. No injuries, but scary as hell for a ten year old. I still get a little on edge in severe storms.

I was unaware of this and did it by accident, the ominous sound it made somehow convinced me for a second that I had fucked up again for some reason lol
Later that year I went back to Ocarina and got through it. Surprisingly the shadow temple didn't scare me as much.
I think it was the idea of seeing the citizens of Hyrule that were once happy turning into zombies that bothered me.

You're missing the point and likely a zoomer yourself. That sign was scary because in Mario64 most of these signs hint at things that actually happen, back then there was no datamining or internet so there was still the possibility that something unexpected could happen if you made too much of a racket in that particular hallway. Even more jarring since the castle interior is a safe hub.

>tfw my alcoholic friend was so arachnophobic he couldn't play skyrim or minecraft in 2011. the movements of both mobs were still too spiderlike even with the pig mod for minecraft and the bear mod for skyrim

Poor guy couldn't catch a break and had a lot of FOMO surrounding that since both of those games were so culturlaly dominant back then. I mean I always gave him shit for it but you can't argue with fear.

We played the original helldivers once and a hunter bug decloaked next to him for the first time and I heard him literally throw his headset off over teamspeak. He said he jumped up so hard in his chair that he literally cracked his table and bruised his wrist, lmao.

That part freaked me out too. It's pretty clever that the further you progress up to that point, the mansion gets less scary because there is a larger safe zone of all the lit rooms, just for the game to pull the rug and leave you surrounded by darkness.

Absolutely.

My ideal Yoshi is:

Jungle green, not that soft pastel Yoshi's Island green β€” I mean leaf-slick, primordial slime green.

Has a slightly too-long tongue that slaps against the screen when you press it, with a wet "fwlop" that makes Toads nervous.

Wears his classic orange shoes, but they’re worn out from years of cross-kingdom adventures. Maybe there’s a bandaid on one.

His voice is deeper, a little raspy β€” like a veteran mount who’s seen some things. He still chirps "Yoshi!" but it's got weight behind it now.

Spits fire, ice, and existential dread, depending on what fruit he eats.

Carries a tiny satchel that he keeps mementos in: a Polaroid of Mario, a chewed-up Koopa shell, a scrap of Shy Guy mask.

And when he runs, his body has just enough bounce and jank to feel a little unpredictable β€” like he's still, after all these years, a wild creature at heart.

That’s the Yoshi I’d ride into battle. Or into the void. Or into the grocery store.

The music is the worst part really, the wailing chorus, the demonic grumbling, and the tense instrumentation are what I'd expect out of a hell level or something, but the actual level itself is too small and barren to have much hell imagery beyond the sky. Factory machines are bloody and yeah toilet humor interspersed with a woman being turned into cat food is fucked up, but according to her no actual dog has gone through it yet? It seems like the kind of place that WOULD become hell on earth (for dogs) if her plan was successful, but as-is the tone of the music is premature.

>Dropping into the lava with a *plop* and an instadeath was what fucked me up as a kid.
It was for a long while, until I found out the same effect is used in the ship in Rusty Bucket Bay and the final boss fight. Afterwards it became amusing and I'd intentionally jump off the cliff in the quiz game section (the game platform had invisible walls) because it was funny to hear the death music interrupt the game show music. Also because it was funny seeing the outcome of the attract mode within the ship where the player slips to his unseen death, and the clouds in the last fight looked like foamy 7up so it was funny seeing him "die "in bubbling lime soda.
>They intentionally made the pathway in the room with Gobi's Valley not hug the wall so an unsuspecting child like me would drop right into the lava
Fucking based of Rare to do that. I died once and was scared shitless and had a fear of going that path for a long time, and it's the only place where I wouldn't jump down for fun.
Also around that same area would be the cheatcode book who had rather creepy music, and none of what he said made sense, made especially scarier when Bottles and Gruntilda would threaten to delete your save if you meddled with cheats.
