Except don't farm dailies for gems, it's a total waste. Save your apples for the events in the attached images, you'll get way more out of each apple. If you're desperate for xp or qp then it's also okay to use apples on the daily exp and qp nodes when they're running a half AP campaign.

Events give lots of mats but they're not always the mats you need. There's also lottos (and other similarly infinitely farmable events) that are even better than the average event. Over the next few months you'll have several good opportunities to farm shells at a better rate than the free quests. Hunting quests, GudaGuda 8, and the Christmas lotto all give shells.
