To add, people already can't play games they bought like Destiny 1 or OG Overwatch. They have been supplanted with arguably inferior/different games, as has The Crew with The Crew 2.
If preserving the original games is 'stagnation' to you, what do you call destroying an original game thereby allowing publishers to upsell players on iteratively downgraded crap? Decline?
