Gamemaker doesn't have a build in boolean type, it has only a build in alias, which it recommends using. Which doesn't really matter because using 0 and 1 is completely fine. That was definitely one of the more nitpicky things about the coding video.

It certainly is outclassed today by things like Godot for pure 2D games, but even so, if you were starting back then, someone half competent can write their own engine, it's not like 3D engines where it's close to being rocket science, 2D is very easy. You'd have less to show for it after 6 months, but your game wouldn't be in development hell 8 years later, it would be actually finished years before.
