Well first off, the Old Testament was written in Hebrew, wherein "wisdom" is a feminine noun. It's like the way you'd call a boat "she" even though your boat isn't a goddess or a person. Many Greeks just translated it to Sophia because it's a personified noun that equates to a similar thing. They weren't stupid. They knew what it meant in context.
