When we liberated them in WWI they could for the first time rule themself until Soviets swallowed them up and created the holodomor as a thank you against them.
In the union they got the best industrial jobs and favours but that was not enough because at the end it was still russians ruling them. After the collapse they were fine being 'neutral' but it was too much when Ukraine was close to get the EU economic integration pact but Moscow forced them to stop it. Then 2014 happened and they revolted. Everything after russians did everything to make the Ukrainians hating russians even more.
