It's not about mandatory or not mandatory, there are parents who purposefully "reward" their kids with donuts, actively prevent them from doing ANY sports or activity (my dad comes into mind). Like, my dad would just mock anybody who did any type of sports; I distinctly remember when I was a kid one saturday morning I was with my dad in the car, and we passed a guy jogging. It was like 9:30 in the morning, and my dad basically scoffed and said something like "who the fuck wakes up to run first thing saturday morning? You have to be mentally ill to do that" and it stuck with me, that sort of mentality.
