Anyone looking to know more should read Sir James George Frazer's book, "The Golden Bough: A Study of Magic and Religion". It explains the system of belief that underlies "magic" as the elites understood it in the 1800s as they laid the foundation of our modern system. It's also where I got my two examples from.
