My mahjong teacher had the same experience with me. Just send him to the bronze room and tell him to drop every 1, 9, and honor until the exclamation mark appears unless he can get three dragons. I played my first several games not knowing what a yaku was or even what a completed hand was until I understood what I needed to google to teach myself. Now I outrank my mahjong teacher and grace this general's friendlies with my excellent yet fun playstyle.
