It just so happens that when the JWST tried to look at the Centauri system in July 2023 there was a "technical error" and they didn't get any usable data.
Nothing about Proxima at all, in 2024 they only looked at Centauri A a couple times.
Theoretically if a ship left Proxima b, say a little after the date that they could have detected the Trinity test, that would be a realistic timeline for fusion drive based propulsion.
In 2023 JWST could have caught a look at the infrared trail left by such a burn. Then the military would have censored it according to known protocols (national security, prevent panic).
This is literally the premise of 3-Body. Which is a book by a Chinese author. Tinfoil: the Chinese uncovered the cover up and did disclosure of their own through 3-body. The U.S. began disclosure a year after his books were translated.

Some of the smartest scientists and astronomers in the world working on JWST built it so that it can't easily take pictures of the Centauri system without shitting the bed?
