The Internet definitely pulled most of that weight, but it's clear to me Game Freak gave up on the quality of Pokémon after getting demoralized by the success of gen 6 and played all the way into it with gen 7 onward. That's when everything Pokémon-related online became terrible and it's never recovered since then.
