>Cream isn't a replacement, she's just a better example of a friend for Sonic and a compassionate supporting character who also loves adventue.

Tails was created to be "Sonic's Sidekick". Amy was created to be "Sonic's Love Interest". Cream was created to be "Sonic's Love Interest's Sidekick". And is overall just a Girl version of Tails, the same way Amy is just a Girl version of Sonic. You're approaching this with the perspective that if there was gonna be a compassionate girl character for Sonic to have around, it should only be Cream. As if Tails & Amy should both be deleted for the sake of a Girl Tails instead.

That's ridiculous. These characters all have their place, and Cream should never be a replacement for Amy or even Tails. Cream is Cream, and she has her spot on Team Rose and the extended Sonic cast. But it's Tails and Amy who are both Sonic's best friends that he's known the longest.
>Sonic and Amy's toxic one-sided situationship is... disheartening, to say the least. Some might even say demoralizing.
That's Ian Flynn logic, and it's wrong. Sonic & Amy's relationship is just fine. It's not toxic for either of them.
>nd people who feel sorry for this clearly mentally unwell little girl will often have complaints of the franchise that it must change so she can get her impossible wish fulfillment.
All Amy wants is to be with Sonic. As long as Amy is by Sonic's side having the time of her life, she's happy. It doesn't take all that much to make Amy happy when she's really not asking for much in the first place.

She's not looking to settle down and live a domestic life, she is a twelve year old girl chasing THE WIND all over the planet, driven purely by the whims of her heart. "Settling down" is a far-off concept for Amy. If Sonic has a boy's heart forever, Amy has a girl's heart forever.

Amy Rose was never designed or intended to be an "Anchor" to Sonic's freedom. And she has never been portrayed as such, period.

>Amy: Boooriiing! I look over there... I look over here... But no matter where I look, the scenery is always the same. I sure miss the good old days when I chased after Sonic... [She thinks back to a point when Sonic was carrying her and running away from Metal Sonic.] Every day was exciting. Full of adventures and blood-boiling thrills... But then he suddenly disappears out of sight. Aaahh. I wonder if something exciting will happen again... Eh? It's cloudy all of a sudden? That's awful! The weather forecast didn't say it was going to rain
These specific lines literally describe that Amy hates Boredom (as her Sonic Channel profile says), and that she loves adventure and blood-boiling thrills. REGARDLESS of Sonic, this is what Amy enjoys, period. Sonic embodies those qualities, so she's drawn to him in particular. Suggesting that it's only Sonic she cares about, and not the adventure, is false.

>>Amy: Amy can do stuff by herself!
>>[Fade to black. Amy walks and thinks about Sonic.]
>>Amy: Someday, I'll make him turn around! [Makes her victory animation.] And then by the time he catches up, he'll be too late!
The entire point HERE is that Amy wants Sonic to see her as strong and capable, rather than a damsel. Rather than a burden.

After the Egg Carrier crash:
>I wonder if Sonic is okay... He's always saving me. It can't go on like this.

Amy didn't like that Sonic was always rescuing her. She wanted to change the narrative.

Start: Amy is bored with life, she wants exciting adventures like when Sonic was around.
Mid: Sonic shows up, Amy is on an adventure, but Amy is captured again so Sonic has to rescue her. Amy reflects on this, and doesn't like that.
End: Amy proves that she can do things all on her own, so she resolves that next time, Sonic will be the one admiring her.

It is a very simple and clean story. Amy is an energetic girl that loves the excitement Sonic brings to her life, but had to become strong enough to take care of herself.
