I think what you complain in that witcher screenshot, is just the modern trend of flat internet GUI design.
For some reason all designers are now taught that being flat and simple like they are designing for webdev interfaces.
Seems a trend similar to the memphis globohomo school of design.
I like minimalism and I read some of those books, and I understand the appeal, but at the same time I think it gets generic when is what is expected of everything.
