There are more people in the world than ever, including in Japan, and correcting for a little less is not a bad thing.

Decreased population leads to more innovation when labor becomes "too expensive".

On the otherhand, fast growing population in places like india or africa makes it sure that you always have infinite cheap labor available, no need to ever innovate or automate anything.
