I gave it a go, first level and... yeah, I'm seeing a lot of red flags already.
One of the things that makes the Nintendo platformers work, be Mario, Yoshi, Wario and Peach, is that they all have a great sense of speed and flow in their controls, Yoshi's Island nailed this aspect perfectly and even Super Princess Peach gives you a pleasant flow in your movement. New Island is straight up blocky and slow. Things like making/throwing eggs and flutter take just enough time for you to lose momentum on your movement, which drags down the experience quite considerably.
Art direction is overall questionable. I love the painting-ish feel it has in theory, but I don't think it works quite well with how undercooked the compositions are and it being 3D on top of it. Also what the ever loving fuck is the music, it's straight up ASS! I see what they wanted to do with the kazoo-ey music and all, but they simply didn't make it work at all.
Lastly, I feel like this game fails to understand what made something like Yoshi's Island so comfy, both in story, music, visuals... it all feels faux and cheap. But then again I think this is a problem that goes as far as Yoshi's Story and only gets worse from there, with the sole exception of Yoshi Touch n' Go.
That said, I only played the first level, so I cant say I have much authority on what I just say at the moment. Maybe it gets better? Maybe it gets worse? I dunno and to be honest I'm not interested.
