IP law is a poorly thought out set of regulations mostly focused on being makework for law firms. Lawyers in positions of power will literally act against their stated goals and interests to push IP law, just because it benefits other legal firms to have a consistent source of work from large corporations engaging in frivolous and alegal lawsuits.
The presence of IP law means that actually providing unofficial post-mortem support is a grey area at best and can get groups slapped with a cease and desist.
