I'm not sure why people get so hung up on the fact that Subaru (and Emilia by proxy) don't do things the right way. The whole point of the show is an isekai that doesn't go the way you want it to.
Subaru's placed in extremely unfair positions and has to learn things the hard way, while handicapped by his former self and issues. Any smart guy would immediately get over Emilia once he realizes how unbelievably uninterested and oblivious she is, unlovable, even, and he's a gigantic retard for rejecting Rem who is wife material.
The entire world in Re:Zero is comically, unbelievably unfair. By Subaru getting raped constantly by the worst possible circumstances, you as a viewer also get to experience that same suffering by watching Subaru fuck it all up. It's like a beautiful mirrored trainwreck that only pays off in the extremely rare moments where nothing terrible happens, like when they first visited the Water City at the beginning of S3 (picrel).
