God damn I enjoy this game a lot but I can't play with randoms, it's just too much of a mixed bag to commit an hour to a run just to end up having shitters wipe to the last boss repeatedly. Playing with friends is night and day and even on our shittiest runs we still clear every time.
Maybe that's the problem and there's some matchmaking shenanigans in the background where struggling players are paired with people with lots of clears, but guiding people around and getting them good stuff only does so much if their skill just isn't there.
