Depends on “works” I guess.
I hate to sound like a boomer but I think communism is ridiculously utopian. To the point where I think it’s crazy that intellectuals and otherwise smart people believe in it. The idea is that in communism once everything is centrally planned and everyone’s needs are met and there is no more oppression that means eventually the police will disband because there will be no more crime and prisons will be abolished and the state itself will ultimately completely dissolve itself because it won’t be needed anymore. My view is that no matter who you involve it will probably never work.
On the other hand it *can* work to an extent. I don’t think they will ever actually achieve full communism but the USSR, North Korea and other states functioned or function to at least some extent. Even if it was sub-optimal. They built militaries and space ships and did manage to do at least the general basic function of a state (building roads and apartments and so on).
