Even at the start of the show the characters are lying to Steven to protect him from the truth, and he lies right back to them to make them feel better which isn't escapism but a very real reaction to a situation that doesn't have easy answers.

I can't comment on the owl house because that was too gay and lame, even for me, to watch.
