I've wondered this too. It feels like Pomni's arrival just as Kaufmo abstracted seems to be unintentionally causing an escalation of tension within the circus. Losing someone they've known for years while the first new person to arrive in what's probably been in a long time was sure to have shaken everyone on a subconscious level.
