On June 14, 2025, Minnesota state representative Melissa Hortman (leader of the Minnesota House Democratic caucus), her husband, Mark, and their dog, Gilbert, were shot and killed at their home. Earlier that morning, Minnesota state senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were shot in their nearby home and hospitalized.
On April 13, 2025, the Pennsylvania governor's mansion was broken into and set it on fire. The intruder intended to harm the governor with a sledgehammer but they did not encounter one another. The fire caused significant damage and forced Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and his family to evacuate.
In the fall of 2024, the front of a Democratic National Committee office in Arizona was shot up on three separate occasions.
On October 28, 2022, Paul Pelosi, the husband of Nancy Pelosi (the 52nd Speaker of the United States House of Representatives), was attacked with a hammer and held captive in his home. His injuries included a fractured skull. The assailant was planning on kidnapping and violently interrogating Speaker Pelosi.
On January 6, 2021, extremist groups stormed the U.S. Capitol to prevent the formal certification of the the 2020 presidential election. In spite of no credible evidence being shown in court hearings in numerous states, they were incited to riot against the election outcome at a Trump political rally earlier in the day. One rioter was shot and killed while trying to break into a secure room. 174 police officers were injured during the attack and four officers died by suicide within seven months due to psychological distress.
On October 8, 2020, the FBI announced the arrests of 13 men suspected of orchestrating a domestic terror plot to kidnap Gretchen Whitmer, the governor of Michigan.
